Evil Dead: Clash of a franchise

As of late with Evil Dead being remade I ask why we never got to see the proposed sequel to Freddy Vs. Jason featuring Ash as a third combatant.

Robert Tapert stated in regard to the film;

“We thought about it for one second but we knew we would have totally trashed the franchise in doing that, in that there would be no reason to reunite Bruce and Sam for Evil Dead 4 whatever that would be nor would there be any reason to go back and reinvent the original Evil Dead with a hot new filmmaker”

So this makes me ask the question, where the fuck did the Evil Dead remake come from?           If it would have trashed the franchise to create a Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash then why would it not do the same with remaking it as you have allowed Fede Alvarez to do. You didn’t see any reason to reinvent the original Evil Dead with a hot new filmmaker yet what have you done?

There is a pretty good comic book crossover that we well done by Dynamite comics but as a fan of Evil Dead, I can establish that it isn’t enough. Yes I can understand not wanting to trash the franchise but remind me once more of what you’re doing it by remaking it with a tainted storyline? The evil one needs 5 souls to rise again? The entire remake was flawed but sold as essentially a bowl of shit with the Evil Dead logo and brand slapped on it.

Of course idiots would buy into it,[Note from Shawn- I am one of the “idiots” who loved the film] how else do you think Justin Bieber became famous in a comparison to that? Why has dubstep become popular? Simply because people seek blandness over brilliance. This is relative to the horror genre. We’re going to end up with 456 Paranormal activity films because people keep going to go see that gibberish, then proclaim that they are a horror fan.

These are the people who catch a movie on Netflix from the horror genre but they don’t live horror, they don’t breathe it, they don’t bleed it. To them it isn’t life, it’s a hobby. As for me being a huge fan of the Evil Dead franchise, I stand pissed off that the film was remade and now they are proposing a sequel furthering the contamination of the franchise.[Another note from Shawn- I’m looking forward to it.] Yet I can’t see Ash duke it out with two other horror giants because it would “Trash the franchise? You could even do a pre screening weigh in like they did with the first addition of Freddy Vs Jason, which I don’t think it was the greatest film as far as horror goes but it was still a decent popcorn kind of flick.

A great marketing campaign just as well would be to film three different alternate endings, with each participant picking up the victory. Rather than waiting until the DVD/Bluray release of the film, you release a different alternate ending per region. This would create one of those awesome arguments between fans of the series. It would be pretty amazing to argue with someone from California as to how the film ended, even to get a Nightmare on Elm Street fan to feel disappointed seeing Jason win over the two other titans only to hear about another version where Freddy wins.

Granted the official ending would have to be Ash so then if further avenues are sought out they could be created. As a horror fan, I would definitely love to see these titans duke it out but at the same time I would want the films to be written as great as they possibly could be. I want to be hanging out of my seat with my jaw dropped just staring in awe and anticipation of what will happen next.

I want scenes where Ash gets stabbed by Krueger’s claw but retaliates just as you think he will succumb to the might of Freddy. I don’t want another film where I am bored and agonizingly able to predict every last twist with a group of people also sitting there going “HOLY SHIT THIS IS STUPID” as was my experience with the remake.

It seems that our only chance to see a franchise crossover would be to see the lizard Freddy face off with Jason and Mia, which I don’t see as having much appeal. As for the future of these franchises and our original favourites, I have no idea what is going to happen with them next.

There is word of an Army of Darkness 2 which I am stoked for but if they cross it over with the current remake universe going on then that is just pitiful. From what I’ve seen in interviews, the “Avengers” idea of Fede Alvarez has been shot down by Bruce and Robert Tapert. As a bloodthirsty fan of the Evil Dead series, I hope that the cross over never happens! With that being said, let’s hope some original ideas start showing up rather than everything being remade.
